In Gratitude for Caregivers this Thanksgiving. A Reflection on National Caregiver’s Month
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, Sandy and I will spend the day gathered at a large table surrounded by friends and family at Charlie Brown’s, the very restaurant where we first met twenty-five years ago. One of the things I am most thankful for is the opportunity to share this time with Sandy —a person who has shaped my journey as a caregiver.
Caregiving is a profound journey – a journey filled with challenges and personal growth. While the role is demanding, it continues to be one of the most enriching experiences of my life.
While life took us in different directions, our reconnection many years later coincided around the time of his ALS diagnosis. I am deeply grateful that I chose to embrace this responsibility. It’s not just about providing care—it’s about accepting the shared challenge of life, leaning into the lessons it offers, and understanding the beauty of dependence and connection.
As a caregiver, you’re not just helping someone else; you’re learning patience, resilience, and the value of shared humanity.
Sandy has shown me these lessons in countless ways. Whether it’s the simple joy of a shared smile, the moments of quiet understanding, or the triumphs over daily obstacles, these experiences have elevated my perspective and have increased my participation in life. I’ve come to appreciate the strength in reliance and the way it brings us closer, enriching the lives of everyone around us.
As I reflect on this journey, I am grateful today and more so for tomorrow. Each day offers a chance to grow, to give, and to appreciate the extraordinary beauty of caring for someone you love. This Thanksgiving, I honor all caregivers who take on this role with love and dedication.
Warmly,
Dorothy Pao
