Lou Gehrig Legacy Gala 2024
The ALS United Greater New York community gathered on November 12, 2024, for the annual Lou Gehrig Legacy Gala, a night dedicated to reflecting on the strides made in ALS research and care while honoring those who have become beacons of hope in the fight against ALS. Hosted by the renowned Jeremy Schaap, with special guest Bob Costas, the event recognized outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to ALS research, care, and advocacy.
Board President Allen J. Popowitz, Esq., and President & CEO Kristen Cocoman opened the evening setting the stage for an inspiring event that highlighted the unyielding dedication of the ALS community and celebrated its collective impact.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who has been a steadfast ally for ALS research and support, was in attendance to present the prestigious Jacob K. Javits Lifetime Achievement Award to Dan Doctoroff, founder of Target ALS and former NYC Deputy Mayor. For Governor Hochul, the fight against ALS is personal, having lost her mother to the disease in 2014. This year, her leadership led to a groundbreaking $25 million allocation in the New York State budget to fund ALS research, underscoring her commitment to accelerating advancements in ALS treatment and care.
Dan Doctoroff, known for his relentless efforts to improve ALS research, was honored for his vision and commitment to ending ALS. Doctoroff’s leadership at Target ALS has been instrumental in advancing research initiatives, providing crucial support to researchers, and driving hope for breakthroughs in ALS treatment.
The evening also celebrated David Lubars, former Chief Creative Officer of BBDO Worldwide, who received the Champion Award for nearly 20 years of dedication to the ALS cause. Lubars joined the ALS United Greater New York board in 2005, after the tragic loss of a colleague, and has since used his platform and expertise to advocate for ALS awareness and support.
As part of this year’s Lou Gehrig Legacy Gala, we proudly presented the Lou Gehrig Sports Award to three honorees who exemplify the resilience, strength, and leadership that defined Lou Gehrig’s legacy. Hockey legend Adam Graves, NFL veteran Thomas Morstead, and the iconic Yankees broadcaster John Sterling were celebrated for their exceptional achievements on the field and profound contributions beyond it.
Adam Graves, a New York Rangers hero, has inspired fans through both his 16-year NHL career and his dedication to community service. Thomas Morstead, a 16-year NFL veteran and current punter for the New York Jets, is equally committed to ALS awareness through his “Punt for ALS” campaign, donating $1,000 for every punt inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. Legendary Yankees announcer John Sterling, with over 5,420 games called for the New York Yankees, has been a beloved voice for fans across generations. These three remarkable individuals carry forward Gehrig’s legacy, each demonstrating leadership and integrity that resonate far beyond the sports arena.
The Gala’s impact extended beyond heartfelt speeches and awards. With generous contributions from supporters, the event raised over $600,000 adding to the more than $26 million raised by the Lou Gehrig Legacy Gala over the years. These funds enable ALS United Greater New York to provide essential care and resources to ALS patients while advancing research to find a cure.
For all those who joined and contributed, ALS United Greater New York extends its deepest gratitude. Together, we are one step closer to realizing our vision: a world free from ALS.
